SocialMarker: A One-Stop Shop for Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is increasingly important for digital marketers and PR professionals. However, because there are so many social bookmarking sites out there, distributing content to all of them can be time-consuming and difficult.
SocialMarker is a free service designed to reduce the time and effort needed to socially bookmark a website. The company claims that you can spread a link on 32 of the best social bookmarking sites in fewer than 15 minutes. They even have a bookmaking toolbar that allows you to socially mark any article you are reading by selecting the text and clicking the SocialMarker button to pre-populate the submission form with the selected information.
Once you submit an article, SocialMarker will bring you through each bookmarking site to finalize and approve your submission. What’s cool is that I don’t have to jump from site to site - SocialMarker brings me through each submission on their site and toggles through each site for me.
I found three snags using SocialMarker. First, I have to sign into each social booking community separately. Second, you have to have pre-existing accounts with each site you want to use. This can be a long and tedious process, but beneficial in the long run. Lastly, there is no way it only takes 15 minutes. It’s good marketing material, but to run through 32 submission reviews takes longer than that. Some sites have additional information you can choose to input or need you to review possible repeat submissions.
Nevertheless, SocialMarker seems to be a great tool. The site was created in September of 2007 and immediately became one of the most popular sites out there. Alexa.com’s traffic ranking has SocialMarker as a top 20,000 Web site. SocialMarker also has over 1,000 of its own Diggs. We used it here in the office today.
Users no longer use just Digg and Del.icio.us. They utilize a host of social media vehicles to monitor and contribute content that matters to them. The problem for digital marketers is keeping up to date on new and popular bookmarking tools and UTILIZING THEM. I am sure more social bookmarking sites will follow Digg’s success and even more people will try to copy SocialMarketer (Google maybe? They take over everyone…). As digital marketers – it is our job to stay up to date.
