Managing Your Brand During a Recession

There’s no avoiding it… we’re all going to be affected by this economic crisis, and should the worst of it directly you, it takes a lot of work to get back on track. Just as businesses need to up their image during a downturn to maintain customers and stay in the black, individuals as well must build their profile to keep visible even if they lose their job.
Continue to build your cachet: Hopefully, if you’re reading this, you know a thing or two about social media. Keep on building your personal brand online via twitter, blogging, and commenting, and you’ll not only establish yourself as a credible source of information and experience, you’ll soon find you have a network of people from which to draw leads, make connections, and hopefully find a new job or other opportunity.
Learn from others: Many of the tactics that work for companies during a recession can apply to individuals as well. For example, WebMarketCentral encourages companies to continue branding initiatives despite the perceived costs. And it’s been posited widely that slashing your marketing/PR campaigns during a recession is a bad idea for business. Why would you do it to yourself?
Nothing to lose: If you do find yourself in dire straits, don’t forget- you’re not alone. While engaging in Web 2.0 tactics won’t singlehandedly change your life, its one way to stay involved and stay connected. And best of all… it’s free!
If you’ve been affected by the economy, what strategies have you been using to stay afloat?

what do you think would happen if all of the sudden social media came with a pricetag? I think business and relationships would suffer….they should do it for a week and then do a story for a major paper about what happened…
